Field codes, and using them in messages
Look up any field's code, and use codes to fill in a record's details in automated messages, campaigns and documents.
Every field in the CRM has a code: a short name that never changes, even when the field is renamed. Put a code between double curly brackets, like {{name}}, in a message or template, and the CRM fills in that record's value when it sends or makes it.
Find a field's code
Open Settings → Field codes (under Data & fields). It lists every field of every module in one table:
- Module and Field: where the field is and its name.
- Code: the code, for example
nameorphone. - Type: the kind of field. Fields marked read only are worked out by the CRM and cannot be set.
- Placeholder: the code ready to paste into a message, for example
{{phone}}. - API path: where the field sits when you read or write records through the API.
- Choices: the options of a drop-down field.
Search by name, code or choice, or narrow the table with Every module and Every type. Click the copy button next to a code or placeholder to copy it.
Use codes in a message
Codes work in the text of automation steps (for example a WhatsApp, SMS or email sent by an automation), in marketing campaigns and in document templates written in the CRM.
You do not have to type them. In an automation step, click Insert above the text box and pick the value. In a campaign, click Insert a field. The code goes in where your cursor is.
For example:
Hi {{name}}, thanks for your enquiry. {{owner.name}} will call you today.
You can reach them on {{owner.phone}}.
- A record's own fields use their code on its own:
{{name}},{{email}},{{phone}}, and your custom fields by their codes. - The responsible person's details start with
owner.:{{owner.name}},{{owner.email}},{{owner.phone}},{{owner.extension}}and{{owner.position}}(their job title). - A deal can also use its linked contact and company, such as
{{contactName}}and{{companyName}}.
Say what to write when a field is empty
Add a fallback after a straight bar: {{name|there}} writes "there" when the record has no name, so a greeting never reads "Hi ,". Without a fallback, an empty field is simply left out.
Why codes, not field names
A code is fixed when the field is made. Rename "Budget" to "Expected spend" and its code stays the same, so messages, templates, automations and connected software keep working.
